2020 Jaguar XE vs. 2020 BMW 3 Series

The XE is a stylish luxury sports sedan that covers all the bases, including performance, efficiency, technology and much more. It features two trims that create a fantastic value over the competition. To illustrate this point, we compare it to the 2020 BMW 3 Series.

The 2020 Jaguar XE is about value for the performance

The XE features two engines that both offer plenty of power under the hood to match the XE’s sporty attitude. The base XE includes a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 247 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. It achieves an admirable fuel economy of 9.8/6.9 L/100 km (city/highway), which is lower than any engine the 3 Series offers. The base XE also has the lowest starting MSRP of any model in the XE or 3 Series lineup, starting around $49,000.

The R-Dynamic has an upgraded 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that increases horsepower to 296 and torque to 295 lb-ft. It increases 0-100 km/h acceleration to 5.7 seconds. Both XE engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission that includes driver-controlled paddle shifters.

The standard BMW 3 Series includes two gas engines. A 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the Sport Line, which rates at 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This is slightly higher than the base XE, but its starting MSRP is HIGHER. The Jaguar R-Dynamic has 41 more horsepower and is within range of the Sport Line’s starting MSRP (+$2,500). If you are looking for value and horsepower, the XE wins this comparison.

The BMW 3 Series also includes a 3.0L six-cylinder turbo that produces 382 hp in the M340i xDrive trim. However, you will also pay a hefty price. With a starting MSRP of around $10,000 more than the Jaguar R-Dynamic, it’s in a price class all by itself.

Other advantages to the 2020 Jaguar XE

The XE (1515 - 1589 kg) is lighter than the 3 Series (1707 kg), which positively affects efficiency and performance. The XE also trims its height to 1,425 mm, keeping its center of gravity low.

Inside, the XE features signature Jaguar design and equipment, with a distinctive feel that you won’t find in a common German sedan, as well as more standard equipment.
